Volunteer Spotlight: Nicole Johnson
Why do you choose to volunteer at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital?
Volunteering is such a fulfilling way to spend your time. I enjoy trying to make someone’s day better, even in the smallest ways. I am also interested in a career in medicine and volunteering is a great opportunity to see the provider’s side of a hospital.
What is your most memorable volunteer experience at Finley?
My most memorable experience at Finley was a conversation I had with one of the patients. We talked for about an hour and never ran out of things to talk about, from favorite restaurants to travel. She had been in the hospital for a while and I felt that our conversation cheered her up. There is nothing better than knowing that a simple chat can help someone through a tough time.
What do you find most rewarding about your volunteer assignment?
The most rewarding part is seeing that the patients greatly appreciate all of the volunteers’ work. Volunteers do so much for the hospital and I am continually impressed with everyone’s dedication and commitment.
Who or what motivates you to volunteer?
I am surrounded by people who motivate me. I am thankful for everything that my teachers, friends and parents do for me and I want to pass on the support to others.
What do you do outside of volunteering at Finley (career, hobbies, interests, etc?)
Outside of volunteering, I am busy with high school, where my favorite subjects are biology and math. I enjoy ballet, playing the piano and flute, and reading. I am also involved in student council and scholastic bowl.
