Volunteer Spotlight: Nancy Sedler
Why do you choose to volunteer at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital?
I was a patient at Finley twice in the past year. Being new to Dubuque, this was my first health care experience in the city. I was so impressed with the doctors, nurses and volunteers that it made me want to be a part of it.
What is your most memorable volunteer experience at Finley?
I can't think of any one experience. The overall experience has been great, from applying and meeting Jolene and Mariah to working in the Cardiac Rehab Unit with Jolene and Diane. Everyone at Finley is so friendly and welcoming. It feels like a family and reminds me of a small community hospital that I worked in for over 20 years.
What do you find most rewarding about your volunteer assignment?
I enjoy talking with the patients in Cardiac Rehab. Being able to share that I was in their same position just last year makes it easy for them to open up and talk about their experience.
Who or what motivates you to volunteer?
I am a retired cardiac nurse and being in the cardiac rehab unit and general hospital environment feels like home to me. I enjoy interacting with the staff as well as the patients. Also, the staff make me feel very welcome and appreciated. Although I only do a few small tasks, they always thank me and say how helpful it is.
What do you do outside of volunteering at Finley (career, hobbies, interests, etc?)
I am an avid sports fan (Packers, Brewers, Badgers). Sorry guys, I am from Wisconsin! I do cheer for Iowa when they are not playing the Badgers. I also try to keep fit by walking and using my elliptical. I also keep myself busy doing some part time work reviewing medical records for an insurance company. I love to cook, read and spend time with family and friends.
