Dr. Ronald Schope Presented with Dr. John Finley Award
On March 30, in celebration of Doctor's Day, David Brandon, President and CEO of Finley Hospital, presented Ronald Schope, M.D. with the Dr. John Finley Excellence in Medicine Award.
The excellence in medicine award was created to recognize overall excellence in medical care by a physician who embodies the mission, vision and values of Finley Hospital as selected by their physician board and hospital colleagues.
Dr. Schope is a pulmonologist at Dubuque Internal Medicine and has a long history at Finley. He was nominated by colleagues for his ability to put the well-being of patients first, while still being available to staff and patients whenever needed. Dr. Schope builds positive relationships with his patients and is well respected among Finley staff.
"Dr. Schope goes above and beyond the call of duty to serve others; making it a priority to provide the best coordinated care for every patient, every time. He listens to the care team, nurtures his patients, and is an excellent doctor," said Brandon. "Dr. Schope isn't just committed - he's continually at the forefront of clinical excellence."
Christine Johnson, Director of Critical Care Services at Finley, works closely with Dr. Schope in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Johnson applauds Dr. Schope's bedside manner with patients in ICU and says he takes time to explain medical conditions so patients understand what is going on. "Dr. Schope frequently sits on the bed with patients as he talks to them about their condition. He is warm and gentle, yet direct with his patients. Dr. Schope is always thinking about his patients and communicating with the care team about the health of his patients," explains Johnson.
Staff at Finley who work closely with Dr. Schope add that Dr. Schope is a wonderful teacher, he's open to suggestions and wants everyone to be part of the team. He knows his patients very well and it is evident that he truly care about each of them.
The Dr. John Finley Excellence in Medicine Award was started in 2014 with the first recipient being Dr. John Viner. Dr. Viner and Schope are highlighted on a plaque at the main entrance of Finley.
