Your Journey in the Emergency Department

by -

The Emergency Room at UnityPoint Health - Finley Hospital is open 24/7, 365 days a year.

When you need emergent medical care, you can count on the experts at UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital to provide safe care, your way. The emergency room at Finley Hospital is open 24/7, 365 days a week – giving you access to expert, high-quality care when emergencies happen. Once you arrive to Finley Hospital’s Emergency Room, you will go through a variety of steps to ensure you get the care you need.

Step #1: Check-In

Upon arrival, you will check-in with a staff member to let them know what you need to be seen for.

Step #2: Triage

After checking in, a Triage Nurse will ask about your current concerns and important related history. The triage nurse will take your vitals and share your information with the care team.

Step #3: Waiting Room

With emergency rooms, it is important to know that the most critically ill and injured patients are seen first. You will be moved to a room as quickly as one becomes available. Your care team will keep you as informed as possible, so you can better expect when to be seen.

Step #4: Treatment Room

In the treatment room, an emergency provider will complete an exam and talk with you about your concerns. If needed, tests or medications may be ordered. It is important to allow adequate time for your test results to be reviewed. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, limited visitor restrictions are in place, so check with your care team for the current visitor policy.

Step #5: Registration

After you have been assessed, a team member will call your room or cell phone or stop by your treatment room to complete your registration and gather your insurance or payment information.

Step #6: Plan of Care

Depending on your illness or injury, you may be admitted to the hospital or discharged home. At Finley Hospital’s emergency department, we understand that pain relief is important, so we will provide you with safe and appropriate options. Once your visit is complete, please refer to the After Visit Summary (AVS) for additional information on care plan and provider recommendations.

Step #7: After Your Discharge

Your discharge instructions will be included in your AVS. This may include a follow-up appointment with your primary care provider (PCP). If your condition or injury worsens, it is important to continue to seek care, whether at your primary care provider’s office, an urgent care clinic, or the emergency room.

Conditions or symptoms commonly treated with a visit to the emergency room include chest pain or any symptoms of a heart attack (sweating, shortness of breath, etc.), stroke symptoms (sudden dizziness, weakness, loss of coordination, balance, and vision problems), choking, poisoning, sudden or severe abdominal pain, head injury, loss of consciousness, open fractures, sudden or severe headache, severe lacerations (cuts), injuries as a result of a car accident, uncontrolled fever or a foreign body in eye.
