UnityPoint Health - Finley Hospital Launches Senior Student Promise Program

by -

UnityPoint Health - Finley Hospital has launched their Senior Student Promise Program.

Dubuque, Iowa – UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital and several area colleges and universities have partnered to create the Senior Student Promise Program for area students pursuing various degrees and employment in the healthcare industry. The program is open to students who will graduate in 2022 or 2023 and will accept a guaranteed offer of employment in a unit or department at Finley Hospital that has been identified as an area of need. The program is open to those who are pursuing careers as healthcare professionals, including nurses, respiratory therapists, radiology technologists, surgery technologists, certified nursing assistants/patient care techs, and phlebotomists.

“UnityPoint Health – Dubuque is committed to fostering a unique partnership with area colleges that enables students to foster a passionate career in healthcare,” Chad Wolbers, President and CEO of UnityPoint Health – Dubuque, said. “By offering financial support and setting these students up for future success, we are thrilled to provide ways for new individuals to join our teams in showing our patients and community how much they matter to this world. It is a true honor to begin doing work that can make a significant impact in our healthcare workforce for many years to come.”

The program’s initial partner schools include Clarke University, Loras College, Northeast Iowa Community College, and the University of Dubuque.

“The Senior Student Promise Program at UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital is wonderful and welcome news for our students, higher education institutions in Dubuque, and our community at large,” Donna Heald, Loras College Provost, said. “The program will provide much needed financial support to students seeking careers in health professions and will help to retain individuals in Dubuque with expertise in those critical need areas. We are deeply grateful for the opportunities that lie ahead and the generosity of UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital.”

Students who qualify for this program will receive financial support from Finley Hospital, up to $20,000 after all financial aid and other funding have been applied. The financial support for Finley Hospital can be used to offset costs of attendance, tuition, fees, books, supplies, etc.

Funding for this program is made possible by the UnityPoint Health Finley Health Foundation.

“We are committed to our support of UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital’s financial incentives to the University of Dubuque’s undergraduate and graduate students,” Neil MacNaughton, PhD, RN, head of the Department of Nursing at the University of Dubuque, said. “This assistance will aid in the attraction and retention of high-quality nurses and other disciplines to work at Finley and remain in the Dubuque area.”

In addition to financial support, area students selected for the Senior Student Promise Program will be guaranteed employment at Finley Hospital after graduation and successful completion of licensure and/or certification. Once employed at Finley Hospital, new team members may be eligible for additional sign-on bonuses, depending upon their position.

“Northeast Iowa Community College looks forward to partnering with UnityPoint Health – Dubuque to create a pathway to address a critical healthcare workforce shortage,” Kathy Nacos-Burds, Ph.D, Vice President of Learning and Student Success at NICC, said. “Students who meet the identified UnityPoint Health criteria will be invited to enter into an ‘earn and learn’ partnership that will provide financial support and potential workforce opportunities for students enrolled in the second year of their healthcare program.”

Additionally, this program allows for students who graduate from area schools to stay within the Tri-State community after their studies. As communities continue to grow and prosper, UnityPoint Health – Dubuque is proud to offer this program as a way to strengthen the healthcare workforce right here in our own communities, which is appreciated by area colleges.

“Being able to offer scholarships and a guaranteed offer of employment with UnityPoint Health is a wonderful incentive to ensure that these high-quality providers stay in our region after graduation,” Lisa Rettenmeier, Chair and Professor of Nursing at Clarke University, said. “At Clarke University, we emphasize community service and involvement in our program and many of our students grow to love Dubuque in their time here.”
