Why do you choose to volunteer at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital?

I am attending Loras College in the pursuit of a degree in Psychology, I am hoping to continue my career in Occupational Therapy, so being at the hospital has allowed me to get some hands-on patient experience. I choose to volunteer at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital because it is such a rewarding experience; between the patients, the employees, Jolene and Prin, and the other volunteers; there is always someone thanking me for something I have done; no matter how small the task.

What is your most memorable volunteer experience at Finley?

My most memorable volunteer experience at Finley is when Marie and I were sitting at the front desk and someone brought in pulled Barbque pork. It smelled so good! Even after they took it away, the smell stayed for the rest of our shift. And now every time I eat pulled pork, I think about that day.
And who could forget about the fun we had bagging all of that popcorn?

What do you find most rewarding about your volunteer assignment?

I escort patients from the front desk to where ever they need to go in the hospital; so the most rewarding part is how grateful each patient and hospital employee is for me to be able to make their day just a tiny bit easier. I also volunteer in the Emergency Department which has opened me up to many new experiences as well. I have also been asked to train new volunteers; which is such an honor to be trusted to teach others what to do

Who or what motivates you to volunteer?

I have always loved volunteering my time in order to help others out. I just really enjoy being able to make another person’s day even a tiny bit easier. The gratitude that people show when they find out I volunteer my time at the hospital makes all of the time I commit 100% worth it.

What do you do outside of volunteering at Finley (career, hobbies, interests, etc?)

I attend Loras College and am pursuing a career as an Occupational Therapist. I love being outdoors; especially in the summer. You can always find me in the water in the summer; kayaking, canoeing, boating, swimming. I also try to spend as much time as I can with my family and with my yellow lab Lucy.
