When it came time for Bev Kraus to have her right knee replaced, she was hesitant about doing a same day joint replacement surgery.
After discussing her options to Dr. Bryan Trumm, of Dubuque Orthopaedic Surgeons, PC, Bev and Dr. Trumm agreed that a same day surgery could be beneficial for Bev.
“I didn’t think I ever wanted a same day surgery,” Bev said. “I was thinking I needed more help after the surgery and that I would stay in the hospital.”
On January 6th, Bev underwent a same day partial joint replacement surgery at UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital.
Bev’s day of surgery started at 7 a.m. with check-in and registration. Then, Bev went to the Babka Surgery Center to start surgery preparation.
“Everyone just kind of came in and told me what was going to happen,” Bev said. “There were a lot of people I saw that day, and they all assured me they were going to take care of me.”
In addition to support from the staff, Bev also enjoyed the option of having her husband, Steve, at the hospital throughout the day.
“I was really glad to hear that my husband Steve could be in the room with me,” Bev said. “He got to listen to all of the things the doctor and nurses were telling me. It helped me knowing we were both hearing these things, because at the time, there is so much going on.”
Once Bev was out of surgery, the inpatient physical therapy team worked with Bev to start basic movements, like standing and walking.
It wasn’t long after, and Bev was discharged and ready to head home.
During her surgery, Bev was greatly impressed with the care she received from all members of the Finley Hospital staff – it’s something she’s used to.
“My family has always gone to Finley Hospital, so it was our preference from day one,” Bev said. “They have helped me get through a lot of things, and I always look forward to good care at Finley Hospital.”
The day following her surgery, Bev began in-home physical therapy with the team at UnityPoint at Home.
Throughout the beginning of her recovery process, Bev enjoyed the option to have therapy within the walls of her own home.
“It was great that I can do that in my own home,” Bev said. “The therapist I worked with added humor to my therapy sessions and advised me on different things to do. I loved the idea.”
Bev is optimistic that her same day joint replacement surgery wouldn’t have been a success without the teamwork of her care team and her.
“It takes a team to pull things off, and it’s true,” Bev said. “You have to have a good surgeon and nurses. I also have to do what I’m told to do. You all have to work toward the final product to get a good outcome. Everyone worked together and that was huge.”
