Volunteer Spotlight: Alexis Alt
Why do you choose to volunteer at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital?
I choose to volunteer at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital because it broadens my experience in interacting with patients. Getting to interact with a diversity of individuals excites me.
What is your most memorable volunteer experience at Finley?
My most memorable volunteer experience at Finley is the time I helped (hopefully) calm the nerves of an expecting mother. This is a completely normal feeling to have in this situation, but to make matters worse the double doors of the department randomly closed. I stuck with her and her husband talking through things with them, hoping to relive some of the worries they had.
What do you find most rewarding about your volunteer assignment?
The most rewarding thing about volunteering is seeing the happiness you bring to the patients. I can tell they genuinely appreciate the guidance I provide them when escorting. Hospitals can be an intimidating atmosphere so being able to assist in relieving this feeling satisfies me.
Who or what motivates you to volunteer?
UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital is filled with compassionate employees/ volunteers which motivates me to come volunteer and be a part of this family. Also, through my service trip experiences I have realized how blessed I am and want to give back to the community I live in.
What do you do outside of volunteering at Finley (career, hobbies, interests, etc.?)
Outside of volunteering I work as a physical therapy tech in inpatient physical therapy at Finley Hospital. I also run track at Loras College, specifically sprints. My interests include anything outdoor and baking. I ultimately hope to become a physician assistant one day. Gaining experience with patients through my volunteer work and job at Finley puts me one step closer to this dream of mine.
