Volunteer Spotlight: Katie Maloney
Why do you choose to volunteer at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital?
I choose to volunteer to UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital because I enjoy the environment around Finley. Everyone is always so nice and caring to not only the patients, but also to the volunteers and employees. There is also a wide range of volunteer opportunities, so there is something for everyone to get involved in.
What is your most memorable volunteer experience at Finley?
My most memorable volunteer experience is when last fall a gentlemen recognized me as being a new volunteer and every time he saw me he would stop and have a quick conversation with me. Once, as he was stepping into the elevator I overheard him say to another volunteer how nice it was to see a new volunteer. That instantly brought a smile to my face because I knew that no matter how big or little my position was that it was making an impact on people.
What do you find most rewarding about your volunteer assignment?
I am volunteering as an escort, and what i find most rewarding is the joy that I get from being able to help people find their way around the hospital, since for many people the hospital can be a scary and confusing place.
Who or what motivates you to volunteer?
My motivation to volunteer comes from within me. I always feel a sense of joy and gratitude whenever I volunteer, and that is why I always try to seek out volunteer opportunities.
What do you do outside of volunteering at Finley (career, hobbies, interests, etc?)
I am currently a first year student at Loras College, majoring in business administration and Spanish. I am involved with Civic Leaders at Loras. Throughout high school I played golf, and although I was not very good it was a lot of fun to play. Many people who know me know that I am completely obsessed with everything to do with Disney, and I am always up to talk about anything Disney.
