Powell CDC Alumni Association Events
We sponsor four major events throughout the year as well as periodic smaller events that are always well-attended and just plain fun. Fun is the name of the game for Powell Alumni. Life can actually be more enjoyable with sober people in sober surroundings than what we used to think was fun. This can be a hard concept to sell to an alcoholic or an addict when newly sober. That is why the Alumni Association is here. We make that transition easier for you. The hard work is done for you. All you have to do is show up!
Sober Under the Stars
We ring in the New Year with "Sober Under the Stars." Finally, a fantastic New Year's Eve event for sober people in the metro area! This event is always well-attended by our alumni and friends and family members. With upwards of 1,000 people in attendance, you can imagine the enthusiasm and excitement among the crowd. IMAX movies are shown, a dance is held with a DJ, live performances with local talent and all of the fantastic Science Center activities are a part of ringing in the New Year. This event has been a crowd favorite for many years. Mark your calendar now!
Powell Annual Banquet
Another popular tradition is the Powell Annual Banquet, held in April of each year at the Sheraton Hotel in West Des Moines. We serve more than 700 guests each year with an informative and entertaining guest speaker. We have had nationally-renowned comedians, and leaders in the substance abuse field speak at our banquet. We hold an annual Silent Auction the same night to raise money for the Powell Association and the patient assistance fund. It has proven to be another great evening to spend with sober friends. The 2019 Banquet will be Saturday, April 27.
Powell's Phone-A-Thon, held each fall, is our major fundraiser in which Powell Alumni choose to volunteer a couple of their hours to call other Powell Alumni and friends and ask for donations. A sense of camaraderie among the volunteers brings folks back year after year to help support the place that we all love. Giving back to a place that helped us so much is an important lesson we learn in recovery. This year's event will be held October 16, 17, 18 2018.
Late summer or early fall is when the Powell picnic is generally held. This annual event will be held Sunday, September 9, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the South Shelter at Water Works Park. Live music, fun contests, children's activities are all a part of this fun day that we spend with our families and friends from Powell.
You will find detailed information about each of these events, right here, as we get near the date of the event, so stay tuned! These are all great ways to get back into life and start having some nice, clean and sober fun with other folks looking for more of the same!
