LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD programs
UnityPoint Health - Physical Therapy offers LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD, intensive amplitude focused programs geared towards patients with Parkinson's Disease. The LSVT programs have been developed and scientifically researched over the past 20 years with funding from the national institutes of health.
LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD physical therapy help patients with Parkinson's Disease to improve function and slow motor deterioration by retraining sensory, motor and cognitive functions through intensive exercise and patient empowerment. The physical therapy also increases speech intelligibility, facial expression and improves confidence in patients with Parkinson's Disease.
What is LSVT Big?
Our Physical and Occupational Therapists certified in LSVT BIG help patients with Parkinson's Disease improve function and slow motor deterioration.
LSVT BIG therapy helps to improve balance, rotation and faster walking with bigger steps for patients with Parkinson's disease. Our patients with Parkinson's Disease gradually make smaller movements and have difficulty initiating movement. LSVT BIG translates bigger movements into the real world, everyday activities and empowers people with Parkinson's disease to re-engage in their meaningful activities.
Our BIG program is designed with the goal to:
- Increased walking speed and bigger steps
- Emphasizing with movements and patterns - "Bigness"
- Rotational movements through exercise moving
- Speed of movement
What is LSVT Loud?
LSVT LOUD therapy helps to improve voice and speech in individuals with Parkinson's Disease. Our LSVT LOUD therapy is offered by speech-language pathologists certified in LSVT LOUD at UnityPoint Health - Physical Therapy. It is common that individuals with Parkinson's Disease speak softly and have difficulty being loud enough for people to hear and avoid groups of people/conversations.
The LOUD program is designed with the goal to:
- Increase loudness of speech
- Improved intelligibility
- Increased facial expressions
- Advancements in swallowing
- Work on precise and clear speech sounds
- Work at the speed of speech
- Work on the intonation (up and down) of the voice
What is Parkinson's Disease?
Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine.
What are the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease?
The main symptoms of Parkinson's Disease are:
- Stiff muscles
- Slow movement
- Problems with balance or walking
- Muscle rigidity
- Soft voice
- Difficulty with handwriting
Parkinson's Disease Treatment Approach
LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD are customized to the unique goals of each patient with patient-centered care as our focus. Our patient-driven LSVT Big and LSVT Loud program offer individualized treatment plans for patients with Parkinson's Disease with different exercises to complete at home. Treatment within the clinic consist of 16 individual 1-hour sessions, 4 consecutive days a week for 4 weeks.
