Congratulations to Andy Heuer, RN, Our Latest DAISY Award Winner

null

Andy Heuer, RN, from Younker 4 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, is being honored as an outstanding nurse and role model at UnityPoint Health – Des Moines. The DAISY Award is awarded to a nurse who has gone above and beyond to show both their patients and teammates kindness and compassion. Andy was recognized for showing extreme care and compassion to a patient who was in Younker Rehab for a few weeks following a stroke. He was nominated by the patient’s daughter.

The daughter said, “Andy provided incredible care to my mom. Not only did he brighten her day by using her name, he also talked with her about therapy and made a great connection. He was very compassionate and friendly to everyone. We could hear his voice in the hall as he greeted other staff and patients. He was often heard saying, ‘What can I do for you today?’ or ‘How is your day going?’ When Mom would feel down or discouraged, Andy would quickly notice and point out her accomplishments and challenge her to meet her next goal. He was also quick to notice Mom having difficulty with pain and was able to make a note in her record so the doctor could adjust her medicine and give her relief. And when Andy found out Mom’s favorite show was “America’s Got Talent,” he made sure her TV was ready on Tuesday nights – even on his nights off he called a fellow nurse to make sure it was playing.”  Great job, Andy!
