UnityPoint Health - Des Moines Earns Physiological Oncology Rehabilitation Institute Center of Excellence Designation
UnityPoint Health – Des Moines is proud to announce our Penn Avenue Outpatient Therapy was awarded the Physiological Oncology Rehabilitation Institute (PORi) Center of Excellence designation. UnityPoint Health – Des Moines is the only health system in Central Iowa to earn the designation.
“This designation affirms the commitment and expertise of our physical, occupational, and speech therapists to helping patients undergoing cancer treatment. The effort to become a PORi Center of Excellence was led by two UnityPoint Health – Des Moines therapists who obtained certifications making them the first PORi-certified specialists in the Midwest,” says Dan Sweet, manager Outpatient Therapy Services at UnityPoint Health – Des Moines.
Oncology Rehabilitation is a medical intervention in conjunction with a patient’s cancer treatment. A comprehensive oncology treatment plan is critically important to addressing all of the patient’s body systems that have been or may be affected by their cancer or it’s treatment. PORi’s goal is to elevate Oncology Rehabilitation to being a norm for a cancer patient’s journey through treatment and post-treatment in efforts to improve a patient’s quality of life.
Team members from UnityPoint Health Penn Avenue Outpatient Therapy Team together with team members from the John Stoddard Cancer Center worked to develop and define the only Oncology Rehabilitation program for patients in Central Iowa. Currently, 11 UnityPoint Health – Des Moines therapists are PORi-certified.
To qualify as a PORi Center of Excellence, the therapy team must have at least one trained PORi-certified Oncology Rehabilitation Specialist in each core discipline. The core disciplines include: Chemotoxicity & Cancer Exercise Management, Breast Cancer Rehabilitation, Head & Neck Cancer Rehabilitation and Pelvic Cancer & Lower Extremity Rehabilitation. Therapists must pass a written exam and a practical exam in a treatment session.
“I am extremely proud of this accomplishment and what it means for our cancer patients in central Iowa and beyond. Our team’s commitment to providing the very best care for our patients is demonstrated through the hard work, time and dedication they put into becoming certified in oncology rehabilitation,” says Sarah Zeidler, executive director of the John Stoddard Cancer Center.
