5 Reasons to Choose 'Level 1' (Infographic)

by -

Not every emergency department can handle every trauma. What sets the Iowa Methodist Medical Center Level 1 Trauma Center apart from other regular emergency departments is that we have the specialists required to treat all types of serious, life-threatening injuries around the clock. Discover five reasons having a trauma team always ready, instead of simply “on their way,” can be the difference between life and death for critically injured patients.

1. Better Survival Rates

According to the CDC, patients treated at Level 1 Trauma Centers have a significantly higher rate of survival than those with comparable injuries who are treated at unverified centers. Treatment of severe injury at a Level 1 Trauma Center lowers a patient’s risk of death by 25 percent. As a Level 1 Trauma Center, Iowa Methodist has the specialists, experience and equipment necessary to save lives.

2. National Recognition

Iowa Methodist’s Level 1 Trauma Center has received the highest national recognition for Trauma Centers through the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and is the only hospital in Central Iowa with this designation. ACS verification confirms a hospital has demonstrated the ability to provide the highest quality trauma care based on hundreds of extensive national criteria and standards of care.

3. 24/7 Medical Care

Every year, thousands of patients of all ages come to Iowa Methodist’s Level 1 Trauma Center for treatment of traumatic injuries, in part because we are on call and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – even on holidays. Our Level 1 certification also means our trauma surgeons are available as soon as a patient arrives. When trauma patients arrive, we’re already prepared to deliver life-saving treatment.

4. Multidisciplinary Approach

Our Level 1 trauma team is led by board-certified trauma surgeons and a multidisciplinary team of highly-trained personnel ranging from the emergency and operating room to the blood bank, laboratory, radiology, rehabilitation services and intensive care.

5. Research & Prevention

Though Iowa Methodist is ready to take care of you and your family in the event of an emergency, it is our hope that you never require treatment for a medical trauma. Our Level 1 verification means we also conduct extensive research, as well as provide important community outreach programs and injury prevention activities to help reduce the number of trauma patients in our area and help community members live longer, healthier lives.

Remember: Whether you dial 9-1-1 and utilize emergency transport, or have a friend or loved one rush you there, you have a choice in where you receive care. Should you ever require emergency care, you have the right to ask to be taken to Iowa Methodist’s Level 1 Trauma Center for the best care in Central Iowa. Your family can also make this request during a time of crisis, if you are unable. Visit us online to learn more.
