Broadlawns and UnityPoint Health - Des Moines Psychiatry Residency Program Earns Full Accreditation
Broadlawns Medical Center (BMC) and UnityPoint Health – Des Moines are pleased to announce their jointly-administered psychiatry residency program has earned full accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The Broadlawns UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency program welcomed the first class of four residents into its four-year training program in July 2018. The program currently includes 12 residents and will welcome four additional residents in July 2021.
Residents in the psychiatry residency program spend time in three different medical settings for core rotations. Broadlawns Medical Center, UnityPoint Health – Des Moines, and the VA Central Iowa Health Care System have longstanding traditions of collaboration in providing superior medical education to students and residents.
“Residents work with a diverse patient population within these systems providing a well-rounded experience,” says Rebecca Lundquist, MD, program director, Broadlawns UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency. “With support, education, and supervision from our experienced faculty, psychiatry residents will graduate with a sense of competence and confidence as they enter independent practice. Residents will also receive exposure to research, scholarly activity and administration to provide a well-rounded experience that complements clinical training.”
The Broadlawns UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency curricula meets all required components of the ACGME. Training for the psychiatry residents includes a full spectrum of clinical rotations: inpatient and outpatient care for adult, geriatric and children/adolescent patients, substance abuse and addiction treatment, consult and liaison services. Psychiatric residents will gain experience in community psychiatry, including psychosocial rehabilitation, community resources and case management.
