Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Services

What is ENT?

ENT is the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the ear, nose and throat. Also known as otolaryngology, this medical specialty also treats problems in related areas of the head and neck.

What is an ENT Provider?

An ENT specialist, also known as an otolaryngologist, diagnoses and treats ENT disorders through a variety of methods such as medication prescription, immunotherapy or surgery. An ENT specialist is often certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology, which requires general medical education, as well as years of specialty training.

ENT specialists are trained in both medicine and surgery related to otolaryngology. This means that along with nonsurgical diagnosis and treatment, your ENT provider can offer surgical procedures of the ear, nose and throat.

What Conditions Does an ENT Specialist Treat?

The following problems or disorders of the ears are often treated at ENT clinics:

  • Hearing loss
  • Ear infection
  • Balance disorders or dizziness
  • Ear noise (tinnitus)
  • Nerve pain or facial and cranial nerve disorders
  • Congenital disorders of the ear

ENT specialist can treat the following throat-related issues:

  • Diseases of the larynx (voice box)
  • Disorders of the mouth and upper esophagus, such as swallowing problems
  • Tonsil or adenoid infection
  • Parathyroid disease
  • Newborn ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) clipping procedure
  • Snoring and other sleep disorders

ENT specialist can treat the following nose disorders:

  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Asthma and allergies
  • Smell problems
  • Deviated septum

When to See an ENT Specialist

If you suffer from any of the conditions listed above, make an appointment to see a UnityPoint Clinic ENT specialist. You may also be referred to an ENT specialist if you are diagnosed with a thyroid disorder, sleep disorder, head or neck cancer, or another disease of the ear, nose or throat. If you are interested in talking to a specialized ENT provider about your sinus symptoms or sleep problems, schedule an appointment at UnityPoint Clinic.
