Diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes during Week 11 - Jaclyn's story

by -

Jaclyn Kurtz with baby

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that forms in some women during pregnancy. Simply put, gestational diabetes causes high blood sugar (glucose) levels that were not seen in the body prior to pregnancy.

At around 24 weeks of pregnancy, about 18 percent of expecting moms will develop this condition. This makes gestational diabetes (GD) one of the most common health issues associated with pregnancy.

Gestational diabetes is one of the more common conditions the UnityPoint Clinic Maternal & Fetal Medicine team may monitor and treat. New mom Jaclyn Kurtz shares her experience with gestational diabetes and the Maternal Fetal Medicine team in her own words.

It is difficult to find words that can express how thankful I am for Dr. Pedron, Alicia, and the rest of the staff at Maternal Fetal Medicine.

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during week 11 of my pregnancy. Because of my age, my weight, and a previous pregnancy that resulted in a large baby, my OB tested me earlier than what is standard practice. Both my one hour and 3 hour test showed that I had gestational diabetes. This was my third pregnancy but first being diagnosed with GD, and I was scared that I wouldn't be able to have a healthy pregnancy, and that I would struggle to abide by the rules of a GD lifestyle. Within a few days of my diagnosis I was referred to a two part class through UnityPoint to get some tools for success in my belt, but it was Dr. Pedron and his staff that helped me to build a safe and successful GD pregnancy journey with the tools I was given.

Being diagnosed with GD, I thought I would be looked down on, and judged ... not the case at all. At my first appointment I was welcomed with smiling faces and open arms by the entire staff. Instantly I knew this was going to be an excellent fit. Dr. Pedron and his staff celebrated my pregnancy with me, put my worries to rest, taught me right away that this was nothing to be ashamed of (it happens to women of all walks of life!) and wanted more than anything for my unborn baby and me to be healthy, and they were going to do whatever it took to make that happen.

We were going to work TOGETHER to accomplish this. I wasn't on my own in this journey! For me, that instant support was huge! Dr. Pedron takes it a step further and sits down with you to determine the best approach for your lifestyle to tackle your GD adventure, is eager to answer any questions you have, and goes above and beyond to ensure you understand all the information you've been given. And he presents it in a way that is easy to comprehend because he applies to it your everyday life.

I actually looked forward to checking in every week with Dr. Pedron and his nurse Alicia. It was like having personal cheerleaders! They celebrate the successful days with you, and if you have a bad day, they are compassionate about it, do what they can to keep your chin up, and get you on the right path. They made it easy for me to have a successful gestational diabetes journey with all of their encouragement, support, and love they have for what they do and for their patients.

On December 9th, 2019 my husband and I welcomed our very healthy baby girl. Her and I both passed our post-partum gestational diabetes checks with flying colors - something I attribute to the wonderful care and guidance I received during my pregnancy from Dr. Pedron and his staff. That care and guidance did not cease upon the birth of my child. He was more than happy to answer my questions of how to better my own health to decrease my chances of getting type 2 diabetes, and make sure that I was starting post pregnancy life with a healthy leap forward.

Dr. Pedron has an amazing and one of a kind team. I recommend Dr. Pedron and his staff to any pregnant woman in need of this type of care - if it wasn't for them, I would not have been able to do it. I am eternally grateful for the care they provided to me and my baby.
