Pediatric Flu Clinic - Now is the Perfect Time to Vaccinate

It’s that time of year again…flu season!  Every year we talk about why it is so important to get a flu vaccine but maybe you are not aware of why you should get one yearly.

The influenza virus strain changes every season, it is important to protect yourself as well as your family against the strains more prevalent each year. You may hear people say, “Every time I get the flu shot, I get the flu!”  This is not necessarily accurate.

The truth is it can take about 2 weeks to fully build up antibodies after getting your vaccine. Normal influenza symptoms include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headache and even fatigue. The vaccine is the only way to prevent you from acquiring the influenza virus.  Knowing that it can take about 2 weeks to build antibodies, now is the perfect time to vaccinate.

Typical flu seasons run from October or November thru early spring. Peak times generally run from January to February, this is the time you are most at risk!  Getting your vaccine now can help prevent you from getting the flu in the coming months.

Plus, the more people that get vaccinated, the better protected we all are!  We can protect those who cannot receive the vaccine such as infants younger the 6 months and those who are immunocompromised.  If you have children younger than five or if they have a diagnosis of asthma, make sure they are getting the vaccine as well.

Call your pediatric office today to schedule a flu shot for your child.
