About 8 months prior to joining the program I broke my ankle at work. While I was home recovering from the injury I gained over 30 pounds because I couldn’t do anything besides lay around the house, watch TV and eat.
I have weighed just under 300 pounds for the last 20 years and when I gained that extra 30 pounds I started to get really depressed. I wasn’t sure what I needed to do to get my life back.
In addition to everything that was going on, I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. I also had sleep apnea and couldn’t sleep. My wife started looking for a program that we could do together to lose weight. She knew this was something that I was going to need support with and wouldn’t be able to do on my own.
When she came across this weight loss program through Unity Point Health we decided to attend an information session. After the meeting my wife encouraged me to give it a try. I’m glad she did because joining the program is one decision I will never regret making.
The best part of the program was the weekly meetings. It gave us all the opportunity to discuss how everyone was doing and we held each other accountable. I also appreciated all the support the staff
gave me. I had a dietitian to help me plan meals and a health coach to assist me with my fitness.
They were always there to listen to all the negative and positive things that were happening throughout the program, and offer suggestions on what to do to keep on track to meet my goals. All of the support helped keep me motivated to continue to have a healthy lifestyle.
The most important thing that I learned, during the program, is how important both exercise and healthy eating are to maintaining a healthy weight.
