How can technology advances impact heart health?
With the rise of technology comes a rise in patient self-awareness of their health. In recent years wearable devices tracking health functions have been on the rise. St. Luke’s Hospital Cardiology Clinic Cardiologist Georges. Hajj, MD explains “Patients are coming to the hospital with concerns of increased or abnormal heart beats, whether out of the blue, or during exercise and the wearable is not responding as they think it should. About 30-40 percent of these patient concerns turn into serious medical concerns.
As of now, Dr. Hajj explains these devices are equally reliable, there is not enough information to say a certain vendor is more or less accurate. He says, “Although, helpful these devices simply are complimentary to the halter monitor (portable heart monitor). The halter monitors give actual tracing to prove if it is an irregular heartbeat, whereas wearable devices with multiple functions are not quite as advanced or reliable. In the works are event monitors without leads, meaning it will monitor the heart using a patch. These devices will make it easier for patients to be monitored on the go, without the hassle of cords.”
Patient Portals are another source of new technological advances. These portals allow patients to be more involved in their health care. Patients can see their medical diagnoses and are able to become more educated about what is going on. Education on their health often translates into a higher compliance to treatment because they are more aware of why a form of treatment needs to take place for them to get healthy. Dr. Hajj adds, “The patient portal is also a source of communication, patient’s can submit their questions to providers who are then able to answer questions much further.
