Dustin Vroegh was looking forward to a return visit to see his health care team. Full disclosure - Vroegh works for UnityPoint Health and was part of the team supporting MedLabs
as they made the transition to operating in a COVID-19 world. In particular, he helped with getting MedLabs up and running using a virtual waiting room, which communicates with patients through text messages.
“My annual physical is coming up and I needed to get bloodwork done for that appointment,” said Vroegh. “Knowing that the new waiting room technology was in place - this was the first time I was able to experience it for myself, as a patient. MedLabs and UnityPoint Health have taken the concept of communication with patients to the next level, having to accommodate real-time solutions as they don’t generally operate with scheduled patients.”
Text communications with patients
Because of COVID-19, MedLabs and UnityPoint Health like many businesses, had to reimagine how they do their work. At MedLabs, routine lab draws have been redirected to certain locations throughout the city. In addition, walk-in hours have been modified to help preserve staff and resources. Once individuals arrive at MedLabs they are asked to text a number to let the health care team know they have arrived and need to be seen. Patients then receive a text telling them when they may enter the building.
“Overall it was a really positive experience,” shared Vroegh. “I didn’t have to sit down in the lab outside of the blood draw because all of my wait time I was able to do in my car. In fact, it was nice not having to touch anything my entire visit. It was really easy.”
Safe Clinics, Safe Care
And although Vroegh works for UnityPoint Health and is familiar with the many safety measures implemented to ensure safety in the clinics, he said it was nice to see it in action when he was there as a patient.
“I was aware that we were doing what we could to protect our patients,” said Vroegh. “I appreciated all of the new safety protocols. All of these things made for a positive patient experience.”
Visitors to MedLabs and UnityPoint Clinics will utilize the virtual waiting room. It’s just one of the many ways UnityPoint Health is working to ensure the health and safety of its health care workers and patients. Here is information on how to utilize MedLabs walk-in services during COVID-19.
