Mom is Forever Grateful for Witwer Children's Therapy Team

by -

Email from Teresa Bailey, mom of twins

There are not enough words of gratitude that I have for the staff at Witwer Children's Therapy in Hiawatha. As a mother of twins on the autism spectrum, I have relied on the therapists there for over seven years. After moving back to Iowa from Chicago in 2011, I was searching for competent, experienced occupational and speech therapists to serve the needs of the twins. My son, Tyler was completely non-verbal expressively with his own voice, utilizing an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device to communicate. I was told if he didn't speak by age 6, he probably never would. Because of the tireless dedication and devotion to Tyler and his needs, Tyler learned to talk at about age 11.

Witwer Speech Therapist Sue Klopfenstein has painstakingly gone through each sound (consonants and vowels) and all their progressions to get him to where he is today. She says he is a willing student, and without that he would not have succeeded, but the truth is Sue honors him and assumes competence, which is still so rare to find day-by-day in Tyler's life.

We are forever grateful to her and Nicole Halverson (who works with his twin sister Skylar), for the way they treat our children with respect and work hard to collaborate with our family and other providers to guarantee the best outcome for the twins.

We have utilized the full array of services at Witwer Children's Therapy (including feeding therapy and Intregrated Listening Systelm (iLs)) physical therapy with the wonderful Megan Flynn (who has been a solid source of comfort for me), because Skylar is healing from spinal fusion surgery due to scoliosis and other physical challenges.

Mothers who go through therapeutic services in early intervention understand when the transition happens to school at age 3, the services our children receive are limited to helping them maneuver the school setting. Only through the love and care of the staff at Witwer, have the twins had "true" therapeutic services to feed their souls and nurture them to be the best they can be. From therapeutic horseback riding, to swim therapy.

Witwer is always looking for ways to help children maneuver the world's expectations of their behavior and to help them regulate. Thank you to everyone, including the lovely ladies Jill and Shauna that always have a smile on and time to talk to our kiddos.
