Shelby's Journey to a Rewarding Career at St. Luke's
Our team members are the heart of UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids. From physicians to nurses to hospital cooks, each one has a unique story that brought them into healthcare.
Shelby Rayhons, now a speech pathologist at Witwer Children’s Therapy, was first introduced to UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital after college. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, along with a minor in Spanish.
“After completing my undergraduate degree, I knew I would need further education to become a speech-language pathologist,” she said. “I took a much-needed break from school and worked at Witwer Children’s Therapy as a rehab therapy technician. This gave me the opportunity to gain more experience in the field before applying to graduate schools.
“I had the chance to sit in on sessions and assist speech-language pathologists working with the pediatric population. My time talking with and observing the therapists confirmed speech-language pathology was something I wanted to pursue.”
After a year at Witwer, Shelby attended the University of Northern Iowa, where she obtained a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. She graduated in May of 2021 and returned to Witwer that July, when she was hired fulltime.
“I really enjoyed my time as a tech at Witwer,” Shelby said. “I was granted so many opportunities working with the staff and with my manager, Julie Gasway, that I knew Witwer was somewhere I wanted to return after completing my education. The flexibility, compassion and energy this workplace and team have are something special. I am thrilled to be back!”
