Respected and beloved doctor, Percy Harris passed away Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017. He was 89.

Dr. Harris was Cedar Rapids' first African American physician and he and his wife, Lileah, made many contributions to the community. Dr. Harris was the first African American intern at St. Luke’s Hospital in 1957, had his own medical practice until 1999 and was Linn County Medical Examiner for nearly 40 years – retiring in 2000.

In 2015 St. Luke's commissioned and published a book about Dr. Harris and his family,  A Healing Presence in Our Community. You can read it by clicking here.
