Sherry Khurana, MD, paragliding; her zest for life influences her practice

Sherry Khurana, MD, believes in balance. A family medicine doctor with UnityPoint Clinic – Evansdale, Dr. Khurana has a special interest in preventative medicine to keep her patients safe and healthy.

But she’s also a risk-taker with a zest for adrenaline. Outside the office, Dr. Khurana has gone paragliding 12,000 feet above the ground in Aspen, CO, jumped off an 108-story stratosphere in Las Vegas, and swam with stingrays in the Grand Cayman Islands. She hopes to add bungee jumping and skydiving to her list adventures, too.

It’s that sense of being able to do it all that made family medicine a natural fit.

“A family physician has the luxury of being able to tie all specialties together and look at the patient as a whole. Many of my experiences have led me to that path,” Dr. Khurana said.

Amid that strong sense of balance exhibited by Dr. Khurana is the opportunity to provide individualized care while operating within a team — whether through leadership opportunities within UnityPoint Clinic or working together with her team members to keep patients well.

“I played volleyball in high school. It contributed to the importance of valuing each member of the team on and off the court. That transcends into my daily work life. Each person in our clinic is vital to our success,” she says.

“I also enjoy problem-solving, which is essential to diagnoses. Each individual interaction with patients allows me to add to my foundation of knowledge and affirm my passion for family medicine.”

What’s the ultimate driver for Dr. Khurana? “Remembering the reason we’re here and improving things so they’re better than how I found them,” she said.
