UnityPoint Accountable Care Announces More Than $28 million in Shared Savings
Achieved from Value-Based Contracts Including the Next Generation Accountable Care Organization Model

UnityPoint Accountable Care (UAC), a subsidiary of UnityPoint Health® and one of the largest Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) in the nation, announced earlier this month it has received more than $28 million in shared savings from its value based contracting efforts from calendar year 2016, including $10.5 million from participation in the Medicare Next Generation ACO Model and $18.2 million from other commercial payors.

Recent results posted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for the Next Generation ACO Initiative show significant progress in the delivery of value-based care. UAC, which is listed as Iowa Health Accountable Care in the CMS results, performed well on all of its value-based contracts including CMS Innovation Center’s Next Generation ACO Initiative – which requires participants to take on greater financial risk than previous models. UAC earned more than $10.5 million in shared savings from participation in the Medicare Next Generation ACO Model for performance on both quality and cost. The results reflect the continued commitment of UnityPoint Health to transition away from the traditional fee-for-service payment model while building on its track record as a national leader in managing patient populations.

“UnityPoint Health is proud of these results as they highlight our success in improving patient experience and quality while lowering cost,” said Aric Sharp, vice president, UnityPoint Accountable Care. “A key element of our success has been the use of advanced analytics to focus our efforts on areas that have opportunity for further improvement. We are continuing to apply these strategies while taking on increasing risk because we believe it is part of the solution to the healthcare industry’s challenges.”

UAC is a network of over 7,750 physicians and providers in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Missouri. In 2016, it was one of the largest participants in the Next Generation ACO Model and is a leader in industry transformation through its participation in the Next Generation ACO Model.
