Purpose & Intended Audience:
To train healthcare providers in the lifesaving skills of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for all ages (including ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, and oxygen), use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO). This course can be utilized for initial or renewal training.
Part 1 is completed at the American Heart Association website which uses dramatizations, eSimulations, animations, self-directed learning, and interactive activities/ This program takes approximately 1.75 hours to complete.
Parts 2 is the skills practice and testing by a BLS Instructor at UnityPoint Health-Des Moines and requires approximately 1 hour to complete.
All parts must be completed to receive a BLS Provider card.
- Log onto the American Heart Association website at www.onlineaha.org The product number is 90-1404 for the HeartCode BLS Online course. (Register & pay by credit card online.) This program is PC and Mac compatible.
- Complete all mandatory checkpoints and pass the written exam online. Print out the certificate showing completion of the HeartCode BLS computer portion to present to the instructor at the Parts 2 skills session. (Access to the online program is 24 months from the initial license activation.)
