Automated Breast Ultrasound System (ABUS)

Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) breast cancer screening is specifically developed to find cancers hidden in dense breast tissue, which may be missed by mammography.

If you have dense breast tissue, the addition of ABUS screening can increase the detection of cancers. ABUS screening, along with the option of a 3D screening mammogram, will help provide a clear evaluation of your dense breast tissue. It's the only breast cancer screening technology FDA-approved for detection in women with dense breast tissue.

The ABUS screening experience

From the moment you lie down on the exam table, you'll realize the ABUS screening is completely unlike a mammogram. A layer of lotion is applied to your breast, and then a scanner is firmly positioned on your breast to acquire the images. The exam takes approximately 30 minutes and provides clear 3D ultrasound images. The doctor will review the ABUS screening images along with your mammogram.

How the ABUS exam is different

ABUS screening uses sound waves to create 3D pictures of the breast tissue. ABUS is the only FDA-approved system for breast cancer screening when used in combination with mammography in women who have dense breast tissue and no prior interventions.

Smart Heart Scan

The Smart Heart Scan helps identify your risk for heart disease and is available at both UnityPoint Health - Methodist, and UnityPoint Health - Proctor. You lie on a table and hold your breath while our CT scanner takes a rapid series of x-ray pictures. The images show the amount of calcium build-up in your arteries. Calcium build-up is an indication of atherosclerosis, or "hardening of the arteries." Men and women between the ages of 40 and 65 should consider getting a Smart Heart Scan. It is also recommended for anyone with one or more of the following risk factors:

  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Family history of heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • History of smoking
  • Overweight
  • Physical inactivity
  • High-stress lifestyle

When you call to schedule your appointment, you will be asked to provide us with a major credit card number. When you arrive for your appointment, you can either sign authorization for us to bill your credit card, or pay by check. Your insurance company may or may not cover the cost of this screening. Medicare will not reimburse for it and no assignment of Medicare benefits will be taken.

Coronary CT Angiogram Scan

A Coronary CT (Computed Tomography) Angiogram is a new test that uses advanced technology to look inside your heart without surgery. Doctors can see if fatty or calcium deposits have built up in the arteries that supply blood to your heart. Untreated, this build-up can cause heart disease leading to fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain and/or heart attack. The test is done using Methodist's ultra-fast 64-slice CT scanner and takes just 10-15 minutes.

Bone Density Testing

Take the first step towards healthier bones! UnityPoint Health makes it easy with DEXA bone density testing. A DEXA test is simple, convenient and painless. A physician's order is required for this test. Your doctor can schedule it for you or, if you have a prescription, you can schedule the test yourself. Schedule your DEXA test at the UnityPoint Health - Methodist or Pekin locations.
