Voiding Dysfunction

Voiding dysfunction refers to a disruption in the coordination between the bladder and the urethra and results in difficulty passing urine. Both men and women can suffer from this complication.

What causes voiding dysfunction?

Nerve dysfunction and non-relaxing pelvic floor muscles can cause voiding dysfunction. In men, it can also be caused by an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).

How is voiding dysfunction treated?

  • Medication can be used to temporarily relax muscles if urinary retention is severe.
  • Self catheterization can be done regularly to completely empty the bladder.
  • Pelvic floor therapy can be utilized to train the nerves and muscles that control the organs used for urination.
  • If other treatments are ineffective, a surgical procedure to implant a pacemaker device can help the bladder and urethra function normally.
