Hydronephrosis is the obstruction of a ureter, which results in the swelling of a kidney due to the build up of urine. An ultrasound can be used to confirm diagnosis in addition to blood and urine tests to check kidney function.

What causes hydronephrosis?

  • Cancerous tumor
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Kidney stone
  • Blockage present at birth
  • Blood clot
  • Scar tissue
  • Pregnancy

How is hydronephrosis treated?

Some blockages can be resolved without surgery, or sometimes surgery is needed to remove a kidney stone that does not pass by itself. Infections can be treated with medication. In some cases, excess urine will need to be drained from the bladder or kidney.

Severe cases can lead to kidney failure, although most people can recover from hydronephrosis with prompt and proper treatment.
