Fractures & Reconstructive Surgery

The orthopedic unit at UnityPoint Health - St. Luke's cares for patients with ligament injuries and fractures. Patients' comprehensive care includes surgery, recovery and physical therapy, in one of Sioux City's most state-of-the-art orthopedic centers.

Pinning of Fractures

During a fracture pinning procedure, tension is applied to encourage fractured bones to line up. A surgeon then checks the alignment using a fluoroscope, a type of X-ray machine that shows the image on a TV screen. A small incision is then made, and the surgeon uses the fluoroscope to guide metal screws or pins into the correct position to hold the bones together.

For most fractures, pinning is the procedure of choice, but for some hip fractures, depending on the extent and location of the fracture, a total joint replacement may be warranted.

Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructive surgery can restore damaged tissue and stability to a joint. The shoulder and knees are two of the most common areas where reconstructive surgery is often needed.

During reconstructive knee surgery, holes are placed in the bones and substitute tendon is pulled across the joint and fixed in the holes. The substitute tendon is taken from the muscles around the knee.

In reconstructive shoulder surgery, torn ligaments are reattached to the bone with suture anchors. The torn ligament is then attached by passing the sutures through the ligament and tying them.
