Car Seat Safety & Recycling
UnityPoint Health - St. Luke's and Sioux Body Shop offer a car seat recycling program. Along with giving parents an easy way to dispose of expired car seats; these two organizations are working jointly to educate parents and child caregivers on car seat safety.
We encourage parents and caregivers to be aware of care seat safety guidelines. A car seat's expiration date and history determine when a car seat needs to be disposed of. Even if child's car seat still looks safe, there may be weak spots which cannot be seen and therefore make continued use of the seat unsafe. Many car seats should not be used after five years or if they have been in an accident.
Why is car seat safety so important? A proper child safety seat reduces the risk of death in passenger cars by 71% for infants and by 54% for toddlers. You can save a child's life by following the guidelines.
It's time to stop using your car seat when:
- The seat has a recall
- There is noticeable sun damage or wear and tear
- The car seat was in a vehicle involved in an accident
- If the history of the seat's use is unknown
- The car seat has expired
- The seat is 5 years or older
Instead of sending the car seat to the landfill or letting it sit in your basement, let us help. Our car seat safety recycling program gives parents and caregivers a free and environmentally safe place to dispose of expired car seats.
Sioux Body Shop in Sioux City accepts used or expired car seats. The seats can be dropped off and will be dismantled and recycled.
