About This ProviderPrint

For Dave Sly, DO, FAAFP, health and wellbeing are about much more than pills and paying an occasional visit to the doctor. Dr. Sly, who serves patients at UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine – Sunnybrook, says true wellness comes from making good decisions.

“The foods we eat and the lifestyle we choose have an impact in the avoidance of disease,” Dr. Sly says. “Small changes, in progressive steps, can lead to dramatic improvements in health over time.”

Dr. Sly says he feels fortunate to be able to help patients on their health journey. A graduate of Northeast Missouri State University and the Kirksville (Missouri) College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Sly completed a residency in Family Practice through the Southern Illinois College of Medicine. He says from a young age he was interested in medicine.

“Growing up, I was always amazed at how caring and helpful our family doctor was, and he became somewhat of a role model for me,” says Dr. Sly, who is Board Certified by the American Board of Family Practice and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice. “I went to the same medical school he did with the hope of developing the same techniques to treat patients with care and to alleviate the anxiety that so many patients experience when seeking medical attention.”

At Sunnybrook, he has done just that. In addition to providing primary care to patients across a spectrum of ages, Dr. Sly offers chronic disease management services, guidance on nutrition, and a variety of procedures including skin biopsy, cryosurgery, joint injections and laceration repair.

He began at Sunnybrook in October 2018, and says he is motivated by helping his patients make lifestyle changes that deliver healthy results.

“I strive to understand my patients’ concerns, and work with them to develop a plan that fits their lifestyle and goals,” he says. “I enjoy knowing that I can play a significant role as my patients make positive changes in their lives.”

Away from the clinic, Dr. Sly practices what he preaches by pursuing activities that foster a healthy sense of wellbeing—body, mind and soul.

“I grew up and have spent most of my life in Iowa, so family and Midwest values are a big part of who I am,” he says. “I enjoy growing my own food. I love to travel, and I love to hear about others’ adventures.”
