UnityPoint Health President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bill Leaver, announced today that he will retire in January 2016. UnityPoint Health’s Board of Directors named Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer Kevin Vermeer, as Leaver’s successor after a transition planning process.
Leaver has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of UnityPoint Health, formerly known as Iowa Health System, since January 2008. He joined the organization in 2003, serving as President and Chief Executive officer of Rock Island, Ill.-based Trinity Regional Health System, an affiliate of UnityPoint Health. Leaver has more than 35 years of executive health care experience.
“I am proud of what has been accomplished during my tenure,” Leaver said. “UnityPoint Health is well-positioned to reach new levels of success as the premier health care system in the region. I am confident that our mission of providing quality and compassionate care to improve the health of our communities is in trusted hands.”
During his time with UnityPoint Health, Leaver guided the organization as it navigated tremendous change in the industry and directed the growth of the organization, as the system evolved from a hospital-centric organization to a patient-centered and physician-driven model. He was instrumental in the system’s growth and expansion beyond the state of Iowa to western Illinois and southern Wisconsin, and championed the UnityPoint Health brand transformation to connect all sites of care.
In announcing Leaver’s retirement plans, UnityPoint Health Board of Directors Chairman Mike Williams said, “Bill has served as an outstanding leader during a period of unprecedented change in the health care industry. We are extremely grateful for his guidance to navigate this new environment and for his leadership, as UnityPoint Health has achieved strong growth and is well-prepared for the future.”
For the remainder of 2015, Kevin Vermeer will assume the title of President and Chief Strategy Officer. He will work closely with Leaver, UnityPoint Health Board of Directors and the Executive Team to ensure a seamless transition.
