Total Joint Replacement Program
Total joint replacement has advanced dramatically in recent years.
Total Joint Replacement Joint Academy
Trinity's joint program offers patients a "Joint Academy" to educate total joint replacement patients about their procedures. The free class - featuring physical therapists, respiratory therapists and nurses - is designed to empower patients with the knowledge they can use to hasten their own healing. Participants learn exercises to increase strength and mobility both before and after surgery, as well as receive a journal that outlines daily exercise goals for their stay at Trinity. They also learn how to prepare their home for life after surgery.
Rapid Recovery Joint Replacement Program
UnityPoint Health - Trinity offers a Rapid Recovery Joint Replacement Program as a way for patients to get back on track faster after hip and knee replacement. Choosing one of our qualified "rapid recovery" knee or hip surgeons means you gain access to a new approach to surgery that will help you:
- Get better faster
- Have less pain
- Be up and walking just hours after surgery
- Go home sooner (likely less than the national average by 1 or 2 days)
- Have someone you choose ready to help you. This person is your "Coach" and is with you before and after surgery.
Proven Quality Orthopedic Care
You can rest assured in your choice in Trinity for your knee or hip replacement surgery. Trinity is the only Quad City hospital with two locations designated as Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacement by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The Blue Distinction® designation is designed to help patients choose hospitals with a proven track record for meeting aggressive quality standards.
Blue Distinction designations are awarded to facilities, such as Trinity Bettendorf and Trinity Rock Island, that have met objective, evidence-based thresholds for clinical quality and safety, developed with input from expert clinicians and leading professional organizations. Medical facilities voluntarily submit clinical data to establish they meet the selection criteria, which include:
- An established hip and knee replacement program, performing required annual volumes for certain procedures
- An experienced hip and knee replacement surgery team, including surgeons with board- certification, sub-specialty fellowship training and required case volumes for knee and hip replacement procedures
- An established acute care inpatient facility, including intensive care, emergency care and a full range of patient support services
- Full accreditation by a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)-deemed national accreditation organization
- A comprehensive quality management program which includes:
- Pre-surgical patient education
- Processes that support transitions of care
- Clinical outcomes that meet objective thresholds for specific procedures such as complication rates and length of stay
Trinity proudly ensures our commitment to quality and patient satisfaction.
At Home Recovery & Rehabilitation after Total Joint Replacement
Your coordinated care begins at home with your personal coach, who will help you with your exercises and personal routine. Patients may elect to go to a skilled nursing center, however, 75 percent of our patients successfully rehabilitate at home.
After having a total joint replacement, treatment continues with physical and occupational therapy. The length of therapy varies by each patient but typically lasts about six to eight weeks, with two or three sessions per week. Therapy can take place at either an outpatient facility close to home or in-home therapy may be arranged if you qualify.
For those in the immediate Quad Cities/Muscatine region, Trinity has convenient outpatient rehabilitation locations. Physical therapy begins with range-of-motion exercises and walking with a cane, walker or crutches. Once those become easier, strengthening exercises are added, as well as transitioning to walking without assistance.

Follow-up after Total Joint Replacement
You can expect to resume normal activities five to six weeks after your total joint replacement. You'll have a final follow-up appointment with your doctor at that time. Your doctor may want to see you yearly for a quick check-up to see how your new joint is performing. After you've fully recovered, low-impact activities and exercise such as walking, golf and swimming are encouraged to keep your new joint healthy.
