Know Before You Go

In an EMERGENCY, call 911 or go to a hospital-based Emergency Department (ED) like UnityPoint Health - Trinity to receive lifesaving care. Hospital-based emergency rooms like Trinity Bettendorf are different than freestanding ED's because hospitals are equipped with more resources necessary to quickly save a life when minutes matter. A hospital offers services like heart catheterization labs to open blocked heart arteries faster and operating rooms for procedures that can't wait.

People who choose a freestanding ED that's not attached to a hospital may be charged just as much as a hospital-based ED visit and may also have to be transferred by ambulance to a hospital in order to receive a higher level of care. For more serious or complex issues like a heart attack or stroke, a hospital-based ED is a better choice. Trinity Bettendorf has been honored for top heart and stroke care. Also, an ambulance transfer from a free-standing ED may or may not be covered by insurance based on the siutaiton and the hospital you choose to go to.

Choose Urgent Care and Save Money

What separates urgent care from a free-standing emergency department? The bill.

Walk-in clinics like UnityPoint Clinic®– Express Care or UnityPoint Clinic Express offer many of the same services as a free-standing ED but will cost you a lot less money. Free-standing EDs bill as an emergency department at much higher rates than an urgent care visit. If you or a loved one are experiencing a serious health emergency – call 911 or go to a hospital-based ED immediately. But if it's a rash, flu symptoms, a sprained ankle or a cough – an urgent care will be able to provide care faster and cost you much less.

Quality Care Options in Bettendorf

There are excellent options for Urgent Care and a hospital-based ED in Bettendorf. UnityPoint Clinic offers two conveniently located walk-in care options: UnityPoint Clinic Express Care - Bettendorf located on the corner of 53rd Avenue and Devils Glen Road, and UnityPoint Clinic Express – Bett Plex located at Forest Grove Drive and Middle Road next to the TBK Bank Sports Complex. Both of these urgent clinics offer an appointment reservation option online to reduce wait times and are within minutes of Trinity Bettendorf's emergency department along Utica Ridge Road.

Individuals with minor illnesses or injuries should first contact their primary care provider. If your health care provider isn't available, UnityPoint Health has several urgent care clinics for minor illnesses and injuries. Sometimes it's hard to know where to go for care – use this link to help you decide and educate yourself on appropriate care.

Some additional considerations about free-standing EDs:

  • Many patients may not initially distinguish between a free-standing ED and an urgent care visit and may be surprised after receiving a free-standing ED bill.

  • Patients need to be certain a free-standing ED will take their insurance as not all insurances may be accepted.
  • Studies have found wait times and treatment times were similar between free-standing EDs and hospital-based EDs.

Know appropriate health care options

UnityPoint Health believes knowing and educating our community on the most appropriate place to receive care will help reduce health care costs for you and the community.

Multiple studies, including studies from Annals of Emergency Medicine August 2019 and United Healthcare have shown that free-standing or extension EDs cost several times more than a doctor's office visit or even a trip to an urgent care. Also, according to the United Health Care Study, if patients were more informed about lower cost options for health care, $800 million could be saved annually. Shifting care from freestanding EDs to physician offices and urgent cares would save over $3,000 per visit.
