About William B. Leaver

William B. Leaver (Bill) received a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration from Western Michigan University, and a Master of Science in Health Services Administration degree from the University of Michigan. Bill served more than 35 years in hospital and health system administration. He served as President and Chief Executive Officer of UnityPoint Health, formerly known as Iowa Health System, from 2008 to 2016. He joined the organization in 2003, serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of Rock Island, Illinois based Trinity Regional Health System, an affiliate of UnityPoint Health. Prior to his time at Trinity, Bill was a Senior Executive at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan.

Bill was a cutting-edge leader, reforming the way healthcare was delivered in the communities he served. With visionary focus on best practice and patient outcomes, Bill championed managing health care cost while ensuring the best value for the patients for whom he and his employees provided care. Bill's philosophy was to always do the "right thing" even when the "right thing" was most difficult.

Everyone touched by Bill knew of his high-level of integrity and commitment to fostering professional growth. He supported women in leadership positions throughout UnityPoint Health. This support was evidenced through a biennial Women in Leadership Symposium that was hosted by UnityPoint Health and was made available to female leaders throughout the system. Bill was an advocate in the strategy that offered licensed professional nurses holding a diploma or associates degree, the ability to obtain a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree from Trinity College of Nursing & Health Sciences. This was a key strategic direction that recognized the care provided by nurses has a direct impact on patient outcomes, and a baccalaureate prepared nurse is educated to provide the best outcome for every patient, every time.

As a life-long learner, Bill was a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives, a member of the Health Management Academy, and a member of the Advisory Board of the University of Michigan Griffith Leadership Center. He shared his passion for learning by presenting to a variety of health care organizations across the United States, sharing his expertise on topics such as Health Care Reform, Disruptive Trends, Leadership and Cultural Transformation, and Business Redesign to Deliver Outcomes-Based Care.

Bill retired in 2015 to spend time with his wife, children and grandchildren; son, Abe Leaver and his children, Tara (Kyle) McAlpine and daughter Lucy, Madison Leaver, and Peyton Leaver; daughter, Rylee (Jason) Beauvais and their children Ella and Abby; daughter Anna (Paul) Papes and their children Aaron, Elijah; son, Mack (Susie) Adama; and daughter, Emily (Terrence) Campagna and their son Therrien. Bill was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling.
