Biography

Karen A Nelson, PhD is a licensed psychologist and health service provider in psychology. In addition to her work with UnityPoint Health, Dr. Nelson serves as the behavioral specialist for the residency training program in Family Medicine at the Cedar Rapids Medical Education Foundation. She served as a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry in the Carver College of Medicine and provided outpatient assessment and psychotherapy to children, teens and adults at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics from 1997-2016.
Clinically, Dr. Nelson specializes in group psychotherapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. She led groups for adolescents and adults in Davenport and Iowa City Iowa. In addition to treating adolescents, she has expertise in treating anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Dr. Nelson is especially interested in helping people to learn new skills and to use their values to cope with physical and emotional pain. She co-leads coping skills groups for adults experiencing pain at Unity Point Cedar Rapids.
Dr. Nelson serves on the board of the Iowa Psychological Foundation and is a Behavioral Family Education Fellow through the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine.
