Ways To Support Your Child

We would like to help support you and your child while you spend time with us at the hospital or in our clinics. You, as the caregiver, are your child's biggest support. Please know our staff is here to make this experience as positive as possible for you and your family.

Support tips:

  • Children pick up on your stress. We know anytime you must use the hospital you are worried for your child. Try to let them see you as calm. Let your child know you trust the medical staff to take good care of him/her and that is why you brought him/her here.

  • Do not promise your child things that may not happen while here. Tell your child: "I don't know the answer to that, but we will ask the doctor and nurses when we get a room."

  • Let your child know you have confidence in him/her and you will help throughout the process.

  • Crying is a way that children cope.

These statements tend to help children cope better:

  • Praise your child for what they are doing well: "You did a great job holding your arm still for the nurse."
  • "I can tell you are worried, hurting and angry. Can you tell me what is bothering you the most?"

  • Acknowledge your child's worries as normal. Encourage your child to ask questions. Ask if he/she would like you to ask the questions.

  • Respect your teenager's need for privacy.

All ages of children have real worries about visiting a health care setting, and your child is no different. By helping your child express his/her feelings and giving him/her a sense of control with appropriate explanations will give your child a sense of pride when finished.
