Pre-Surgical Tours Before Pediatric Surgery

Comfort and care for you and your child

Your child is scheduled to have surgery at UnityPoint Health- Methodist, and he/she may have some questions. Before your child's scheduled surgery, it is important that the reason for surgery is explained honestly and simply. This is why we are inviting you and your child to attend our Pediatric Pre-Surgical Tour program for children ages 3- 12 years old. During your visit you and your child will become more familiar with things you'll see and do on the actual day of surgery.

What will we do on the tour?

Your tour will start in the pediatric play space located in Surgicare. Here your child will have an opportunity to meet a UnityPoint Health-Methodist Child Life Specialist and/or a Surgical Prep Nurse and to play in the pediatric play space. During this time we will read the prep book "Let's Get Ready For Surgery" and invite the children to participate in medical play. Medical Play allows your child to familiarize themselves with some of the medical clothes and equipment they will come into contact with on the day of their surgery. The tour will continue to the Pre-Op patient room where children will be given the opportunity to explore the blood pressure cuff, pulse ox sensor, and see the special hospital clothes they will wear. The tour will also include the recovery area where children will reunite with you following surgery. It is a good opportunity to ask any questions that you may have.

"In addition to helping children know what to expect, preparation can actually increase the child's confidence and ability to cope with a (future) healthcare event. When children are successfully prepared for their healthcare experience, they are more likely to experience an overall reduction in emotional distress, and increased confidence in their ability to cope with stressful situations." * Allowing children to learn about the things they might see, hear and feel during their visit to the hospital in a safe, non-threatening manner often lessens the anxiety children and their families may have.
