Permanent Pacemaker

Pacemakers are used to treat slow heart rhythms or conduction disturbances of the heart. A permanent pacemaker is about the size of a silver dollar. It is implanted under the skin underneath the collarbone and is attached to the heart by wires (called leads) which are attached to a pulse generator. Pacemakers are used to regulate (pace) the heart when the heartbeat is persistently slow or irregular.
