Peripheral Vascular Angioplasty and Stenting

This is a treatment for patients with peripheral vascular disease. A catheter (thin, flexible tube) with a balloon in its tip is inserted in the artery in the leg. X-ray helps the doctor thread the catheter into the area that is obstructed. Next the balloon is inflated to push the plaque against the wall of the artery. A small wire mesh tube (stent) can then be inserted to keep the artery open, helping to improve blood flow to the legs.
