Bone Marrow Transplant Program
UnityPoint Health - Methodist is home to the only Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant Program in Central Illinois. Our staff is trained in all aspects of care for patients receiving stem cell transplants, from harvesting the stem cells, to reinfusing the stem cells (returning the stem cells to the body), to caring for the patient throughout the entire transplant process.
What To Expect
Once a patient is determined agreeable and eligible for transplant, our Bone Marrow Transplant Navigator is contacted by their oncologist. Our navigator will work with the oncology team to ensure that all pre-bed testing has been ordered. Our navigator will then contact the patient and review our navigation program.
We discuss the pre-bed testing that will be needed prior to scheduling the transplant, and will provide education and what to expect regarding Trifusion catheter placement, harvest, and transplant. The patient will be mailed a booklet specific to their cancer, stem cell transplant guidelines, tips to improve the hospital stay, and a map of the facility. The navigator will maintain regular contact with the patient and the oncologist from initial referral, harvest, and transplant. Once the transplant is completed, the patient will be discharged from navigation and continue follow up with their oncologist.
