UnityPoint Health Opens Only Suspicion of Cancer Clinic in Central Illinois

UnityPoint Health is the first healthcare organization to open a Suspicion of Cancer Clinic in Central Illinois and the second in the nation. The Suspicion of Cancer Clinic is a collaboration between UnityPoint Health and Illinois Cancer Care to quickly and efficiently guide prospective cancer patients through the testing process.

“The number of providers and care teams patients need to navigate screenings and treatment options is overwhelming. Our goal is to help patients have access to cancer treatment sooner. Instead of patients having to contact several different care teams on their own, they receive one on one attention and communication from the clinic’s provider,” says Anne Bowman, Director of Oncology.

Shawn Seibert, MD from Illinois CancerCare is the UnityPoint Health - Suspicion of Cancer Clinic provider. UnityPoint Health and non-UnityPoint Health primary care providers refer patients with abnormal imaging results to the clinic. Most patients have had a suspicious finding for lung, liver, and pancreatic cancers.

“Every minute counts to help patients receive the treatment they need. Delays in receiving treatment can impact survival rate, specifically with certain lung cancers. Dr. Seibert coordinates all the medical needs of each patient. We also have a team in the clinic dedicated to monitoring the status of each patient’s care plan to ensure they receive care in a timely manner,” says Bowman.

In addition to the clinic’s medical support, the site is staffed with an oncology psychosocial services specialist. This team member provides social and psychological support for patients including counseling, transportation assistance, groceries, finances, and any other need a patient may have.

“She is available to patients throughout their whole diagnosis and treatment process. Our department is committed to treat the whole person not just their cancer. And it’s rewarding for everyone in our team. It’s awesome to be able to make the difference we do and help patients live long and healthy lives,” says Bowman.

UnityPoint Health – Suspicion of Cancer Clinic is located in the Methodist Atrium building at 900 Main Street Suite 100, Peoria Illinois 61602.
