Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention at NewStart
Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) is a program available at UnityPoint Health - Meriter - NewStart. Based on the growing body of research showing the benefits of meditation for treating substance use disorders, MBRP is designed to bring mindfulness to those who have addictive tendencies.
Mindfulness is a skill that can be practiced by noticing thoughts and experiences with a curious, non-judgmental attitude. This increased awareness can help find a new way to approach stress and events that influence relapse.

Participants will work toward:
- Developing a deeper understanding of triggers and habitual reactions
- Changing their relationship to discomfort
- Building a lifestyle that supports mindfulness and recovery
- Fostering a non-judgmental, compassionate approach toward themselves
Participants assigned to MBRP report significantly lower rates of relapse to substance use and heavy drinking than those who participated in treatment as usual.

This group will run in 8 week cycles.
