UnityPoint Health – Meriter Visitor Restrictions, Closing and Postponements - UPDATED 5/11/20

Please see the updated visitor guidelines at UnityPoint Health – Meriter facilities below:

Visitors Restrictions - Meriter Hospital

All routine visiting at the hospitals and clinics will be restricted until the transmission of COVID-19 is no longer a threat to our patients, staff and community.

  • All Adult Patients – One (1) support person.

  • Pediatric Patients (including NICU) – Two (2) support persons.

  • Mother-Baby Services (Triage, Labor and Delivery, Antepartum, Family Center and Perinatal Clinic) – One (1) support person.

  • COVID-19 Positive and/or COVID-19 Patients being tested – No support persons, unless patient is at Beginning-of-Life or End-of-Life, in coordination with nursing team. We encourage the use of electronic means for loved ones to communicate with these patients.

  • End-of-Life – Three visitors allowed in a 24-hour period, in coordination with nursing team.

  • Interpreter services will be provided via phone or video methods only. To provide the safest environment possible, we will no longer allow in-person interpreter services.

  • Doulas and midwives are considered vital parts of our patients' care team. These providers do NOT count as the one support person allowed under the current hospital and clinic visitor restrictions.

    Virtual Visiting

We know that it's vital to our patients' health and wellbeing to see loved ones during their stay. Due to COVID-19, UnityPoint Health - Meriter currently has visitor restrictions in place that in most cases, will not allow friends and family to visit in-person. But, that doesn't mean you can't connect! Many phones, tablets, and computers have free and easy ways to communicate via video, voice or text. Click here for some tips on virtual visiting options.

    Hospital Procedures

Madison hospitals are slowly resuming patient procedures that were postponed at the onset of this crisis. The postponement of these procedures and non-urgent surgeries was taken with the health and safety of our community and staff in mind. That same safety focus is exactly why Madison hospitals are now making changes to increase the access to vital services. Under new protocols, we have confirmed our ability to safely respond to this crisis without putting others at risk. You will see changes: universal mask use, limits to visitors and other non-hospital employees in the building, screening of staff and visitors and social distancing measures, to name a few. Additionally, access to COVID-19 testing for patients who do not have symptoms and a robust pre-operative screening process further improves safety for patients and staff. Staff will reach out directly to patients whose appointments were postponed to discuss rescheduling appointments and procedures.

Meriter Hospital Visitor/Support Person Guidelines

We are committed to keeping our patients, visitors, and employees as safe as possible. You must follow these safety rules to protect yourself and others:

  • All visitors are always required to cover their nose and mouth with a face covering.

  • A support person will only be allowed if they do not have symptoms of respiratory infection (fever, runny nose, cough, shortness of breath).

  • All hospital visitors will have their temperature taken and screened for symptoms upon entry to the hospital. Additionally, children under the age of 16 will not be allowed, unless they are visiting a patient at the end-of-life and accompanied by an adult.

  • Hospital visitors should stay in the patient's room during your visit and keep the same visitor within a 24-hour period.

  • Hospital visiting hours end at 9:00 p.m. We ask that you leave the facility at this time. Exceptions may occur within the Birthing Center and NICU only.

  • Do not gather in public spaces; maintain social distancing (at least 6 feet away from others) even when wearing a face covering.

  • No more than three (3) people may ride in an elevator at one time to allow for social distancing.

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds or use hand sanitizing gel.

  • No visitors are permitted who have had a diagnosis of COVID-19 in the last 10 days, and no visitors are allowed to visit patients being treated for COVID-19.

  • It is strongly encouraged that you obtain and consume any food or drink outside our facilities to ensure compliance with face covering requirements. Follow unit guidelines for food and drink in the Birthing Center and NICU.

Clinic & Therapies Visitors/Support Person Guidelines

  • Patients and visitors are required to wear a mask at all times.

  • Visitors/Support persons will be screened for COVID symptoms upon entry and have their temperature taken.

  • All individuals are expected to respect social distancing (maintaining at least 6-feet away from others) even when wearing a face covering.

  • An accompanying support person is not allowed to wait in the waiting room, as the waiting room is reserved only for patients. The support person must always accompany the patient throughout their appointment. If this is not possible (e.g., patient requests privacy), the support person will be asked to wait in their car.

  • Patients are always welcome to have someone accompany them by phone or other electronic device.

We understand these visitor restrictions may be difficult for you. While we are committed to providing a family-centered care environment, right now limiting visitors is in the best interest of our patients and staff.
