Healthiest State Walk set for October 2 - You're Invited!

GRUNDY CENTER – Members of the public are invited to take a step for better health by joining Iowa’s annual Healthiest State Walk on Wednesday, October 2. In Grundy Center, a thirty minute walk is scheduled for 12:00 noon, beginning at the Grundy County courthouse gazebo. A message about regular walking’s impact on heart health, as well as a chance to win prizes, will be including in the thirty minute event. The public walking event is jointly sponsored by the Grundy Center Wellness Committee, Grundy County Memorial Hospital, and Walk with a Doc. “It’s a simple way to join co-workers, neighbors, and family to demonstrate a commitment to improved health,” remarks Dr. Eric Neverman, UnityPoint Clinic physician, who leads monthly Walk with a Doc events to encourage physical activity.

The state’s 2019 event slogan is “Walk More - Connect More” to encourage Iowans to walk with a neighbor, friend, co-worker or family members. The Annual Walk also serves as a kick-off to Healthiest State Month activities scheduled throughout October. A new health initiative, “Live 5-2-1-0” is being unveiled throughout the state, with all Iowans reminded that “Healthy Choices Count!” To learn more about the 5-2-1-0, campaign visit www.iowahealthieststate.com/5210.

Since 2011, the Healthiest State Initiative has encouraged hundreds of thousands of Iowans in schools, worksites and communities across the state to walk for 30 minutes on the designated day in October. The goal of this year’s event is to have walks organized and registered in all 99 counties of Iowa. Grundy County has walks registered for Dike, Reinbeck, and Grundy Center.

The Healthiest State Initiative invites all Iowans to take this first step in building a healthier lifestyle and hopes that a 30 minute walk can become part of the everyday routine for thousands of Iowans.
