How to Give
Many additional ways exist to ensure high-quality health care for future generations in the greater Grinnell area. The UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center Foundation is thankful for people like you who have embraced the medical center's mission and make possible all the good that we do for our patients and their families.
All donors are recognized on our donor recognition wall located on the first floor of the medical center. Donors are also recognized in the medical center's online annual report.
Here are a few more examples of how you might consider sharing your support:
By pledging to make a monthly gift, you are giving a steady and reliable contribution to help ensure the best in diagnostic services and medical treatment at your community hospital. A small gift each month allows us to spend more money on quality healthcare services and less on administrative costs. If you choose to make a monthly pledge, you are able to increase, decrease or cancel the pledge at any time. You'll also receive an annual statement to assist in tax preparation.
Best of all, giving monthly is easy and convenient. You choose the amount you want to give and your gift is safely and securely automatically withdrawn from your bank account or charged to your credit card.
By spreading your generosity over the course of a year, you may be able to consider a larger gift than you thought possible. Make a Monthly Gift Online
An annual gift is just that: a sustaining gift made every year. The annual fund is an important part of unrestricted financial support, which allows us to continue to raise the bar in quality and safety. It also allows the medical staff to purchase new medical equipment used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Contributions are also used to:
- Underwrite training for clinical staff.
- Purchase bike helmets for all area third graders.
- Support healthcare needs of those who are uninsured or underinsured.
- Fund health services like Grinnell Regional Hospice, Grinnell Regional Home Care, Grinnell Regional Public Health and Grinnell Regional Mental Health.
- Offset the costs of programs like the Babies Room, the Loan Closet and the Senior Education Program.
Your donation can be given "unrestricted," meaning the Foundation can determine the greatest need at a given time. You can also designate your gift to a specific service, department or program at UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Make an Annual Fund Gift Online.
Memorial and Honor Gifts
Making a gift in memory or honor of a loved one is a great way to pay tribute to that individual. Contributions can celebrate any occasion including birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, holidays and the birth of a child.
We acknowledge both memorial and honor gifts by sending an appropriate note to the family or friend in whose name the gift was made. The amount of the contribution is never revealed. A separate receipt will be sent to the donor.
To make a memorial or honorary gift, please include who the donation is made in memory or in honor of and who we should mail an acknowledgement letter to on your behalf (please include name and address). Make a Memorial or Honor Gift Online.
Honor GRMC Staff and Providers
Has a doctor, nurse, staff member or volunteer made a difference in the care you or your loved one received? The Tribute Program offers a way to express your appreciation for anyone at UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center who made your visit to the hospital a little bit brighter.
As part of this program you can also give a monetary donation of any amount and direct them to any area of the hospital where you think they are needed most. The caregivers that you are thanking will be notified of your donation, unless you wish to remain anonymous. Make a Tribute Gift Online.
If your business offers an employee matching gifts program, you can make your hard earned dollars go twice as far with a matching gift to the medical center. Many employers will match your contribution, even if you are now retired. When you send us your donation, just mail your company's matching gift form with your contribution and we'll take it from there. Please check with your human resources department to determine whether your company offers a matching program and if your gift is eligible. Make a Gift Online.
Gifts of Securities and Appreciated Assets
We gratefully accept gifts of appreciated securities. By giving securities or other appreciated assets, you can maximize the size of your charitable gifts, conserve cash you would have given and enjoy multiple tax benefits.
By donating appreciated assets to a charitable organization, you receive a charitable tax deduction based on the current market value of the gift and avoid tax on any capital gains (certain tax rules apply for gifts of assets that are not securities). The charitable recipient sells the asset, realizes the full market value and avoids any capital gains tax.
As with any type of gift to us, you can direct your contributions to the purpose you designate.
To process a gift of this nature, please contact the development office before selling the asset.

Charitable IRA Rollovers
The deduction for charitable rollover contributions has not been extended for the 2015 year. However, in February, the House of Representatives passed the America Gives More Act of 2015 which, if passed by the senate, would make the IRA rollover deductions permanent.
Although it isn't known how long the bill will take in the senate, if the bill were to pass later this year, any contribution made before the passing and enacting of the law would be retroactively included for a deduction.
This legislation permits donors to make charitable gifts from their IRA accounts without having to include the IRA distribution in their adjusted gross income. The key requirements of the legislation are that:
- The IRA account holder be age 70 ½ or older at the time the distribution is made to the charity.
- The distribution had to be made directly from the IRA custodian to the charity.
- The gift cannot exceed $100,000 per donor per year.
If you elect to give a gift through this instrument, please instruct your IRA broker or custodian to transfer your contribution directly to us. We would also appreciate it if you contacted the Office of Communications and Development to discuss your intentions. That way we can ensure your gift is used how you wish for it to be used.
Gifts of Grain
You may wish to consider donating a portion of your harvest to UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center Foundation. Our Gifts of Grain program allows you to make a gift of grain or other commodity crops from unsold inventory.
If you are an active, self-employed farmer using cash basis accounting, be sure to follow these specific steps to receive the intended tax benefits from a gift of grain. If you do not, the IRS may treat the transaction as a sale by the farmer, resulting in a contribution of cash, rather than a contribution of grain. Please closely follow these steps to ensure that ownership of the gifted grain is transferred prior to sale and you receive recognition for your gift:
- Deliver the amount of grain you wish to contribute to the elevator in the name of Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
- Request a grain storage receipt in the name of Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
- Do not tell the elevator to sell the grain.
- Notify us of the delivery.
- We will then ask the elevator to promptly sell the grain and the medical center will send you a receipt acknowledging your gift.
If you have questions or would like to discuss the benefits of this program, please call the Office of Development at (641) 236-2961. To make a gift of grain, please contact Heidi Ramaeker Pearson, development specialist, at (641) 236-2961.
A gift to one of our endowment funds is a gift that keeps on giving. The income earned through endowment investments helps to assure that the hospital's long-term needs are met.
We currently have three different endowment funds.
Grinnell Regional Medical Center Endowment
This fund is managed by professional advisors in conjunction with UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center staff and volunteers, with oversight from the foundation board. Gifts to this endowment will help support services and needs at the medical center for years to come.
Grinnell Regional Medical Center Endowment Fund at the Greater Poweshiek Community Foundation
This fund was created by a donor to support local healthcare improvements at UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center for years to come. Gifts to this fund are eligible for the Endow Iowa Tax Credit Program, which offers a 25 percent state tax credit in addition to normal federal charitable income tax deductions.
Grinnell Regional Mental Health Center Endowment Fund at the Greater Poweshiek Community Foundation
This fund was created by a donor to support local mental health services. Gifts to this fund are also eligible for the Endow Iowa Tax Credit Program, which offers a 25 percent state tax credit in addition to normal federal charitable income tax deductions.
If you are interested in making a gift to one of these funds, please contact the Office of Communications and Development so we can assist you.
We offer donors several unique and underutilized ways to make a charitable gift, some with significant tax advantages. All gifts can be designated to an area you choose.
Planned giving takes one of two forms:
- A legacy. This is a charitable gift provided for in a person's will (a bequest or device), which typically comes out of their estate.
- A gift made during the donor's lifetime. This is a charitable gift in which the donor receives a tax benefit at the time of the gift, and usually also still obtains some type of other benefit associated with the donated property. These gifts are usually established with a contract that ends after a fixed period or upon the death of the donor or some other person.
The Legacy Club recognizes those who have made a commitment to the future of health care in our community by naming UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center in their will or funding a planned gift to the medical center. Legacy Club donors establish an ongoing relationship as partners and are kept informed of special events, projects and plans for improvement. In addition, the names of donors, with permission, are included on the Legacy Club recognition plaque and are listed in our annual report.
