Braxton Jon was born at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Regional Medical Center on August 7, 2020 weighing 9 pounds, 6 3/4 ounces, and measured 21 inches long. First time mom, Denise, shares a little about Braxton’s arrival below.
Birth Story: As a first-time mom, Denise Woodin, couldn’t be happier with her decision of choosing Dr. Turek as her OB/GYN.
“My best friend had gone to him and had a great experience, so it made my decision easy,” shares Denise. “I was impressed by his professional, yet relaxed demeanor. He always made me feel comfortable in my appointments.”
While Denise never imagined she’d be pregnant during a pandemic, she admits it didn’t really feel much different receiving care.
“Other than wearing masks, it felt pretty normal. It was nice that my husband, Jon, could still come to my appointments throughout it all,” adds Denise.
Blessed with a healthy pregnancy and no complications, Denise made it to her due date.
She says, “I made it to my due date, got tested for COVID-19 and was ready to get the show on the road.”
Arriving to the hospital around 8 a.m., Denise was shortly induced, and her water was broken.
“I started pitocin right away but hardly made any progress all day,” Denise shares. “Around 7 p.m. my night nurse came in and said she was going to help get me dilated to 10 cm.”
At about 1 a.m. after trying different positions and helping move baby, it was finally time to start pushing. Yet after two additional hours of pushing and still no baby, Dr. Turek provided Denise with words of encouragement and some additional options to help move things along.
“I really appreciated how supportive Dr. Turek and the entire team was. They were all so helpful and great about sharing my options throughout my labor. And they always asked what I wanted or felt comfortable doing,” Denise explains.
At last, at 3:43 a.m. on August 7, 2020, Denise and Jon welcomed their baby boy, Braxton, into the world.
“It was a long day, but I had a great experience. Jon is a bit of a nervous nelly so it was nice having Dr. Turek and the nurses around to put him at ease. They all were super helpful answering all our questions and showing us various tips and tricks on how to handle a newborn baby.”
Favorite Nurse: We had the same day nurse, and the same night nurse for the two days we were hospitalized. Both Ronda and Kari were really, really good!
Favorite Doctor: We were impressed with Dr. Turek and liked his demeanor and medical philosophy.
Pediatrician/Doctor for Baby: Braxton will go to nurse practitioner, Christy Vitzhum at UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine in Humboldt.
Words of Wisdom: MyUnityPoint was a game changer. I never used the patient portal prior to my pregnancy but it was super easy to use and helpful. My questions were always answered within 24 hours. And, I never had a hard time scheduling an appointment and it was never a big deal if I had to reschedule.
