What do I need to know about my baby's poop.

How Many Wet / Dirty Diapers per Day?

Newborns usually only urinate once in the first 24 hours. You may see your baby have a wet diaper for each day of age up to day six. By day six, they have 6 - 10 wets per day. Call your healthcare provider if they have less than five wet diapers a day consistently.

The stools change from black and tarry (meconium) to yellow-green. Breastfed babies have stools that resemble light mustard with seed-like particles. The stools should never be firmer than peanut butter. It is not unusual for the newborn to have a bowel movement soon after each feeding.
